A’Fixing to Go Turkey Hunting, March 29

March 18, 2011

The end result of a successful hunt for a wild turkey.

As opening day of turkey season approaches a sigh of relief is heard all across the country because the turkey hunters are now, after weeks or months of preparation, finally out of the house. The “A’Fixing to Go Turkey Hunting” stage is over and perhaps the hunters’ families can get some respite from constant turkey calls, turkey videos and general turkey talk that has dominated late-winter activities.

In this show Hovey describes in humorous detail his own “A’Fixings” as he gets a flintlock rifle and modern muzzleloading shotgun ready for the season, selects his call and gathers his equipment for opening day. The “flint” that will be used in the gun is a fragment of an arrowhead that is from between 1,000 and 3,000 years old and may or may not work when he ultimately gets a tom in front of the gun.

A companion video (see below) shows “Cantank” the flintlock gun, “Helga” a hard-shell decoy and some of his other turkey-hunting equipment. This YouTube video may be seen by clicking on the following link:
